Staycation’s All I Ever Wanted

Conveniently located two blocks from Union Square, art galleries including The Museum of Ice Cream, Chinatown and the Financial District, you’ll find San Francisco’s century-old gem: The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel.

The Clift Hotel was commissioned by Frederick C. Clift in 1913 and opened for business in 1915. Not only was this hotel the first to be fire and earthquake proof, but it also became the largest hotel in California. In 1933, Albert Lansburgh, designer of the War memorial Opera House, added the swanky Redwood Room Bar that is said to have been paneled utilizing wood from a single 800-year-old Redwood tree and is one of the most famous features of this historic hotel.

After undergoing a newly multimillion-dollar renovation, The Clift Hotel officially reopened its doors in spring 2021 with an all-new modern lobby experience and rejuvenated guest rooms. From these 372 beautifully and stylishly designed guest rooms, 70 are suites or junior suites which also include a luxurious private apartment option.

Hotel amenities and features include state-of-the-art entertainment in every guest room, minibar with curated refreshments, high-speed WiFi, 24-hour fitness center, complimentary bikes, and access to an adjoining full-service fitness club with a swimming pool. Energy saving environmental controls throughout this modern hotel to reduce carbon footprint. To continue to strive to be an eco-friendlier hotel, The Clift hosts 10 hives with over 10,000 honeybees on their rooftop and uses that honey in its kitchen and the bar. Guests are also allowed to bring their pets.

As for the food scene, guests are in luck to kickstart their mornings at The Clift’s new eatery and café, Fredericks. The new restaurant was opened in the fall of 2021, offering high-end coffee options, gourmet pastries and snacks to grab to-go on a busy day or classic eggs Benedicts a la carte and fluffy omelets to warm cinnamon rolls made in house to savor and indulge over on a social lunch date. Fredericks has a little bit of something for everyone to fuel visitors for breakfast and lunch to power through the day.

The glamorous Redwood Room is the go-to evening spot to sip slow on artisanal handcrafted cocktails paired with elevated bar food. There is a wide selection for wine lovers alike, but the main highlight are their exclusive cocktails. The selection features the bar’s take on classics but with a modern twist including “The Mr. Clift”, a Manhattan made with Peerless Single Barrel Redwood Room Select Rye Whiskey.
